How divisions and MMR work

Your rank comes from a hidden skill rating called MMR (matchmaking rating). You gain MMR when you win and lose it when you lose, and a win against stronger opponents is worth more than a win against weaker ones.

Each rank and division covers a range of MMR:

  • Climb past the top of your division and you move up to the next one.
  • Drop below the bottom of it and you move down.
  • After Division IV comes Division I of the next rank, for example from Gold III Division IV to Platinum I Division I.

Each competitive playlist has its own MMR and rank, so you can be Champion in Doubles and Diamond in Standard at the same time.

Ranked playlists

The core ranked playlists are Duel (1v1), Doubles (2v2) and Standard (3v3). The ranked Extra Modes, such as Hoops, Rumble, Dropshot and Snow Day, have ranks of their own too.

Placement matches

When a new season begins, your first 10 matches in a competitive playlist are placement matches. They decide which rank you start the season at, based on your MMR. If you'd rather not play them yourself, see placement matches.

Season rewards

Season rewards are earned with wins: each reward level takes 10 wins at that rank or higher, from Bronze (10 wins) up to Supersonic Legend (80 wins in total). See when the current season ends for the season dates and the full breakdown.
